Online Reading: Portrait of an Artist
Artist Quote: "My early etching
work represents a nostalgic illusion of my childhood fears with a longing for
Western fantasy. Later I began to
develop subjects inspired by mythology and literature using washi paper and
wood board." -Rieko Fujinami
This artist's work really captured my attention. I really enjoy her color and expressive marks she uses when working. For example her piece titled "Ambivalent Indignation" has a very unique kind of mark making that seem "splotchy" and this works well for her piece. In her interview she mentioned that she works with a variety of materials, which I find interesting

Reading Discussion Assignment
"A drawing can be highly controlled and delicate, an act of homage, redolent of personal memory, history or desire, or it can be automatic, responding to irrational elements or chance encounters of materials." This quote was nice because it really made me think of how our every day lives can inspire us to draw. I immediately thought of the surrealist (Christian Edler) and his drawing "Silent Escape." This piece came from his memory along with many of his other pieces. I have also attached another piece from him "Forsaken"
